Gasification of Alternative Feedstocks

November 12, 2024

Deadline:    11/22/2024

Eligible Applicants:  State Gov, Local Gov, Industry, National Lab, Native American Tribes, Non-Profit, Education, U.S Citizens, Federal Agencies but not as the Prime Recipient, Foreign Entities that are incorporated

Fuel Type:  Hydrogen

Agency:  Dept. of Energy Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management

Description:  Up to $15 million in federal funding to make clean hydrogen a more available and affordable fuel for electricity generation, industrial decarbonization, and transportation. Technology advanced under this FOA will support DOE’s Hydrogen Shot Initiative, which seeks to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen by 80% to $1 per kg in one decade to enable the commercial development of new, clean hydrogen pathways in the U.S.

Eligible Projects:  This Funding Opportunity Announcement is for the development of innovative gasification designs/systems for converting alternative feedstocks into syngas to enable the low-cost production of clean hydrogen. The program is motivated by the unique potential of carbon capture-friendly oxygen-blown gasification processes to convert solid mixed biomass and waste feedstocks to clean hydrogen which is useful as a decarbonized energy carrier and for the synthesis of decarbonized transportation fuels, chemicals, electricity, and other useful products. This FOA will support research and development projects that convert feedstocks – such as coal, biomass, petcoke, household waste, industrial wastes, and waste plastics – into synthesis gas, also known as syngas, to enable the low-cost production of clean hydrogen. This opportunity solicits applications in two areas of interest: Research and development toward demonstration of entrained flow gasification technologies for alternative feedstocks. And Research and development toward demonstration of fluidized bed gasification technologies for alternative feedstocks.
