Research shows that electric vehicles (EVs) are in fact much cleaner than gasoline-powered cars.
A study by the International Council on Clean Transportation found that electric vehicles emit fewer lifecycle emissions than gasoline-powered vehicles. According to the report, in the U.S. electric vehicles actually emit only one-third of the lifetime emissions of their internal combustion counterparts.
Another analysis by the Union of Concerned Scientists reports that the average gas car in Michigan gets about 25 miles per gallon of gasoline. With the current electricity mix in Michigan, driving an electric vehicle has the emissions equivalent of driving a that gets 54 miles per gallon, showing that driving an electric vehicle creates far fewer emissions than internal combustion engine vehicles.
Not only that, the emissions benefits of an electric vehicle will continue to increase over time. As the electricity supply transitions to cleaner sources such as solar and wind power, the lifecycle emissions of electric vehicles will get even cleaner, too!
