Michigan’s Multifamily Properties Get a Boost for EV Charging

January 30, 2025

Michigan has set a goal to deploy 100,000 EV chargers by 2030, making clean mobility accessible to all residents. For most EV owners, the convenience of charging overnight at home is key. However, for the 23% of Michiganders living in multifamily housing, this can be a challenge.

Grant Opportunity for Multifamily Properties

EGLE has announced a new competitive grant program, the Clean Fuel and Charging Infrastructure Program.  This program offers $5 million to support the installation of EV chargers at multifamily properties. These first-come, first-served grants aim to make EV charging infrastructure more accessible to residents of multi-unit dwellings, including apartments and condominiums. Grants require a minimum of 30% match.  However, grants will cover up to 100% of the project cost if the project is located within an environmental justice community. The maximum project award is $300,000.

We are proud to have helped advocate for this funding in the state budget and collaborated with EGLE to shape the RFP.

New Guide for Multifamily EV Charging

To coincide with EGLE’s grant program, Clean Fuels Michigan and the Michigan Clean Fuels Institute have released a comprehensive guide.  This guide assists multifamily property owners in understanding and implementing EV charging infrastructure and answers common questions, including:

  • Why invest in EV charging? Installing chargers can help attract and retain tenants, diversify revenue streams, and increase property values.
  • How to get started? From assessing parking and electrical service to navigating permits and legal considerations, the guide provides actionable steps to launch a successful project.
  • How to ensure a smooth rollout? The guide offers tips on coordinating with stakeholders and selecting the right solutions tailored to a property’s unique needs.

A big “Thank You” to the teams at Consumers Energy, DTE Energy, and the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification for sponsoring this resource.
