Early 2024 Clean Mobility Funding Wins

January 25, 2024

In just the first few weeks of 2024, Michigan has secured millions of dollars of federal funding for clean mobility projects. Michigan and Michigan-based entities have recently been announced as recipients of three federal funding programs that will act as a crucial catalyst for propelling the state toward a more sustainable future. These funding opportunities will drive technological advancements and infrastructure improvements, keeping Michigan at the forefront of the clean mobility industry.

Charging & Fueling Infrastructure Grant Program

Lansing and its neighboring communities will receive $8 million from the Federal Highway Administration’s Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Discretionary Grant Program. This investment will support the installation of up to 50 new public electric vehicle charging stations. The chargers will be placed to fill gaps in the existing network in Lansing and across mid-Michigan. The investment will significantly broaden access to EV charging infrastructure, ensuring a more inclusive and widespread adoption of electric vehicles. With increased charging options, EV drivers in Michigan can embark confidently on their journeys, knowing that reliable charging infrastructure is readily available.

The Michigan Capitol Area Regional EV Charging Gateway Initiative (MI CAR–EVCGI) was supported by Clean Fuels Michigan members Michigan Clean Cities and the Lansing Board of Water and Light in collaboration with local partners. This project was one of forty-seven projects awarded in the first round of CFI funding.

EPA Clean School Bus Program

In the most recent announcement of funding recipients from the EPA Clean School Bus Program, school districts in Michigan won funding to deploy 66 new electric school buses. School districts in Detroit, Lansing, and Pontiac each received $5.9 million to fund the purchase of 15 electric school buses. Clean Fuels Michigan member Highland Electric was awarded funds to deploy electric school buses to Brimley, Mason County, Redford, and Ludington School Districts. Flint School District also received an award to deploy 10 electric school buses. These investments further solidify Michigan’s leadership in transitioning to cleaner rides for kids.

Electric Vehicle Charger Reliability & Accessibility Accelerator Grant Program

The Michigan Department of Transportation was awarded $1.8 million from the Federal Highway Administration’s EV Charger Reliability and Accessibility Accelerator Program to fund the repair or replacement of 170 EV charging ports in Michigan. This City of Imlay also received an award to repair charging ports in their jurisdiction. This investment helps to improve the reliability and accessibility of EV charging stations, enhancing the overall user experience for EV drivers in Michigan.

Together, these programs represent more than $28 million of federal funding to support the clean mobility industry in Michigan. Clean Fuels Michigan will continue to advocate for opportunities to leverage federal dollars to support Michigan’s clean mobility journey.
