Charge Up Michigan

August 13, 2024

Deadline:  Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis until funding is exhausted.

Eligible Applicants: Non-Profits, Public or Private Organizations that can host publicly accessible charging stations, can fulfill program priorities, and are enrolled in a utility rebate program.

Fuel Type:  Electric

Agency:  EGLE

Description:  The Charge Up Michigan Program is an EV Charger Placement project that aims to build the infrastructure for DC fast charging stations in the State of Michigan to ensure the feasibility of all long-distance trips for EV users, within the state, and also to neighboring states and Canada. To achieve this, the EGLE and partners (electric utilities and applicant) will provide funding for qualified DCFC EV charging equipment, site preparation, equipment installation, networking fees, and signage. The grant will be the lesser of 33.3% of the total cost or a direct match of the amount the electric utility is paying, up to $70,000, and can only be used for eligible EV charging equipment.

Eligible Projects:  Project funding is awarded based on two reports from Michigan State University: Electric Vehicle Charger Placement Optimization in Michigan: Phase I – Highways and Full Tourism Report and EV Charger Placement Optimization in Michigan: Phase II – Urban Report. These reports identify the ideal number and locations for DC fast chargers to ensure comprehensive charging infrastructure across the state, covering both highways and selected urban regions. Future funding will focus on addressing unfilled “nodes” and areas where additional charging stations are needed. To see which nodes are still eligible for funding, refer to the “Charge Up Michigan” layer on the Michigan Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Programs Map and the Urban Report.  Applications for installing EV charging stations in densely populated urban areas are encouraged.
